The first foreign Navy to perceive the validity
ofintermarine technology was the Royal Malaysian
Navy.
In 1981, well before the completion of the first
"Lerici" built for the Italian Navy, they
awarded intermarine a contract for four minehunters.
Due to the specific operational and technical requirements
of the Royal Malaysian Navy, the requested configuration
was completely different from the one selected by
the Italian Navy, although the hull concept was
the same.

The four minehunters of the "Mahamiru Class"
were delivered by the end of 1985. The length of
these ships is 51 m., and the displacement is 540
t. The propulsion system is based on a concept similar
to that of the Italian Navy, being implemented by
two separate propulsion systems:
For transit and normal navigation the ship
is propelled by two diesel engines (made by MTU)
driving two controllable pitch propellers, giving
the ship a speed in excess of 16 knots.
For precise navigation over the
minefield the ship is propelled by two Riva Calzoni
auxiliary thrusters, each driven by an electro -
hydraulic motor, and can achieve a speed of 6 knots.
Electric power is generated by three diesel generators,
all of them located above the water line to minimise
the magnetic signature and the underwater-irradiated
noise. The Combat System consists mainly of a Thomson
Command and Control system, a Thomson Sintra Hull
Mounted Sonar (HMS) for mines discovery and classification,
and two Mine Disposal Vehicles PAP 104 (supplied
by ECA). The Communication system is made by TRT
and the armament consists of a 40 mm. gun.
