In 1887, Leopoldo Rodriquez established a small repair yard in the city of Messina, located on the Eastern tip of Sicily. This yard prospered despite the effects of two significant events: An earthquake in 1908 that destroyed the city and killed half the population followed by the outbreak of World War I.
Leopoldo's son Carlo was responsible for expanding Rodriquez's business activities at the onset of World War II. It was then that Rodriquez began repairing railroad cars for the Italian railroad companies that proved to be a lucrative and successful venture.

It was during World War II that Carlo Rodriquez became aware and extremely interested in the hydrofoil concept that the Germans had studied but not expanded upon. Shortly after the conclusion of the war, a German naval architect Mr. F. Lobau was hired in Messina to further the hydrofoil concept and to develop a commercially viable version.
The hard efforts by Mr. Lobau paid off in 1956 with the successful launch and sea-trials of the world's first commercial fast ferry "Freccia del Sole".

“Freccia del Sole” the first commercial Hydrofoil ever built

This revolutionary vessel was quickly followed by the improved PT20 and PT50 class hydrofoils.
Carlo Rodriquez seized upon the success of "Freccia del Sole" and established Aliscafi SNAV in 1958 to operate hydrofoils and prove their commercial viability. The first commercial service was established between Sicily and the Italian mainland across the straights of Messina but quickly expanded to other routes.

This period saw a significant advancement in passenger comfort and vessel motion with the advent of the fully stabilized hydrofoil. The RH 160 model used an electronic control system to control the trim tabs and stabilization system that allowed these vessels to sail in even rougher seas but with increased comfort.

TMV 47, the first stabilized monohull
This period saw Rodriquez again at the forefront of fast ferry development with the birth of the technically advanced and superior Aquastrada series. In addition, a range of catamarans was launched to meet specific customer requirements.

The Aquastrada series was initiated with “Guizzo”, a 100 meter car and passenger monohull with a service speed of 47 knots. Delivered in 1993 and followed a year later by her sister-ship Statto, these vessels were then and are still the world's fastest car carrying monohulls in commercial service.

The success of Guizzo and Statto led to the production of passenger only as well as passenger and vehicle carrying ferries from 47 to 115 meters with designs up to 150 meters.

Other significant events within Rodriquez include:

1997
Rodriquez Engineering, the in-house vessel design and engineering center for Rodriquez as well as for other shipyards, was established.

1998
Rodriquez Marine Systems was founded for the engineering as well as sales and marketing of the patented Seaworthy Management Systems (SMS) ride control and stabilization systems, bow thrusters, hydraulic systems, and integrated vessel control systems. These systems are used on all Rodriquez vessels and are marketed globally as well.

TMV 84 “Ramon Llull”
The year 2000 saw Rodriquez sign the contract for the construction of the Aquastrada TMV 115 “Federico Garcia Lorca” for the Spanish operator Balearia Eurolines Maritimes. This vessel, built in only 16 months and delivered in July 2001, represents the largest and the most successfull Aquastrada built by Rodriquez. Due to the great success of the ship Balearia ordered a second vessel, the Aquastrada TMV 84 “Ramon Llull”, delivered in May 2002. In July 2003 a sister ship of the Ramon Llull is delivered: "The Princess". Thisi is a TMV 84 built in only 48 weeks for the Jordanian company Arab Bridge Maritme and is the first fast ferry to operate in the Guf of Aqaba.

Rodriquez Yachts

This period has also been a strategic time for Rodriquez. At the forefront of technology and innovation, Rodriquez decided to enter the large yacht market in 2001. A contract was signed immediately for the construction of a 72 m Exploration type motor yacht.

This contract was follow-up with the launch of a complete range of designs for aluminium yachts, referred to as the Rodriquez Yachts Custom Series from 35 m to 70 m, in collaboration with the well known Italian designer Francesco Paszkowski. Based on these designs, a contract for a Custom Series 38 M was soon signed. Also with the acquisition of Intermarine (see below) Rodriquez Yachts has enlarged their product range to include composite yachts.

Conam

At the beginning of 2002 the Naples based pleasure craft builder Conam was acquired.
Conam, established in Pozzuoli (Naples) in 1980, specializes in the production of 14 to 24 meter long fiberglass pleasure boats.
Conam has built more than 300 boats in 22 years. The shipyard occupies 4,000 square meters of covered space and employees 30 individuals.
Rodriquez purchased Conam because they are a dynamic and innovative company and a typical example of Italian entrepreneurialism. With enormous style and technological potential that, combined with a global sales and marketing structure, they are poised to become a market leader.

The new Conam Logo

From the beginning, the design of Conam’s boats has been known for its revolutionary style and performance. Conam produces easy to operate, reliable and safe to navigate boats combined with excellent performance and comfort. It is not by chance that Conam has 60% repeat business, proof of the fact that those who choose Conam always come back.
Conam's production is based on two main lines: Sport and WideBody:
- - 46 Sport
- - 58 Sport
- - 60 WideBody
- - 75 WideBody

Being a part of Rodriquez, Conam can now benefit from the rationalization of production methods and combined use of various group yards that will shortly double annual production.
In addition, the entire product range will be expanded and updated.

The new Conam 75 WideBody
Rodriquez's technological background has been employed to create a new Conam flagship: the 75 WideBody a 75 foot in fiberglass reinforced polyester which is the first pleasure-boat to use the same technologies seen on 40-knot ferries. After the official presentation at the Genoa Boat Show 2003 four contracts have been signed to build four 75 WideBody.

Intermarine

Following their diversification strategy, Rodriquez Cantieri Navali acquired in September 2002 the Intermarine shipyard, based in Sarzana on the north west coast of Italy.
Intermarine, founded in the early 1970's, is a naval shipyard specialised in the design and manufacture of composite, i.e. GRP, carbon fibre of Kevlar ships.
The name intermarine is historically linked to the design and construction of sophisticated minehunters, unique ships specially equipped for safely hunting and sweeping sea mines

Mine Explosion Test
Since 1985, Intermarine has supplied, and continues to build, minehunters for many of the world’s leading navies. The reason for this success is the innovative and unique construction technique developed by Intermarine, a technique that has been demonstrated as ideal for the construction of the hulls of those vessels used for mine countermeasure operations.

To date, Intermarine has designed and built, directly or through licenses granted to its partners, 38 minehunters in seven variants for the Navies of :

· Italy ("Lerici" and "Gaeta" Class, for a total of 12 vessels)
· U.S.A. ("Osprey" Class, 12 vessels)
· Australia ("Huon" Class, 6 vessels)
· Malaysia ("Mahamiru" Class, 4 vessels)
· Nigeria ("Ohuè" Class, 2 vessels)
· Thailand ("Lat Ya" Class, 2 vessels)

27 m Fast Patrol Boat
The design and construction of minehunters has been for many years, and still is, the core business of Intermarine, but today the range of products is widely diversified in both the military and civilian fields.
In the military field, Intermarine's attention has been focused on high performance Fast Patrol Boats (from 16 to 40 m) for patrolling and for law enforcement duties.
Also for the military, Intermarine has built catamaran-type hydro-oceanographic survey vessels, one of the largest composite catamarans built in the world along with composite superstructures, incorporating ballistic protection, built for a large OPV of the Italian Navy.
With its sophisticated technology and unsurpassed quality in FRP construction, Intermarine has quickly become a major player also in the commercial/civilian field.
All Intermarine vessels benefit from the technology and knowledge acquired through years of activity and research in the field of FRP construction and of the new developments under way in the field of new composite materials.
For the yacht market, Intermarine can build custom and semi - custom megayachts in from 35 to 70 meters.

After the acquisition of Intermarine, Rodriquez made some very important strategic changes to the commercial and production departments.
The merger of the technologies of Rodriquez and Intermarine has allowed Rodriquez to add to her product range the Intermarine fiberglass mega yachts meanwhile Intermarine has now added to its traditional FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) product range the complete aluminium special craft range of Rodriquez.
Both companies in their long history have heavily invested in technological research devoted to the best development and exploitation of materials (FRP and aluminium) along with hull optimization and stability systems reaching the cutting edge of marine technology.
The joining of the two companies and the 4 large production facilities allows Intermarine to have with a very flexible production system and a large product portfolio that includes:

· · Aluminium Fast Patrol Boats (from 20 m)
· · FRP Fast Patrol Boats (from 16 m)
· · Aluminium FRP Fast Crew Boats (from 20 m)
· · FRP Fast Crew Boats (from 16 m)
· · FRP Hydro-oceanographic Ships
· · FRP Mine Countermeasure Vessels.
· · Other tailor made naval vessels
